2021 Zinfandel

Zinfandel was always synonymous with Paso Robles. Its distinctive big fruit and easy charm is embedded in the local winemaking spirit. Our Kate’s Vineyard Zinfandel has been a staple our Estate bottlings and a constant reminder that wine is meant, above all, to embody joy and pleasure.

Tasting Notes
A powerhouse Zinfandel that is inky rosewood in color and full of black cherry, cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla. A perfect blend of spicy tannins and blackberry juice and black olive tapenade immediately fill the palate and builds intensity towards the finish. A rich layer of toasted American Oak joins the mix begging to be paired smoker cooked cheeseburgers or slow cooker spareribs.

Wine Story

Vineyard Notes
Kate’s Vineyard consists of 10 acres planted entirely to Zinfandel that we have farmed since 2002. Located less than a mile south east of the Calcareous Estate, it shares almost identical chalky soils. 2021 was a great vintage for Zinfandel. The cooler than usual summer months help protect the thin skinned varietal and avoided raisining. When the inevitable September heat did arrive, the vines and fruit handled it well allowing us to produce a full and powerful Zinfandel without an exaggerated expression of overly ripe fruit.
Production Notes
The fruit was handpicked and cluster sorted before destemming. The fruit was gravity fed, uncrushed, into 4-ton open top concrete fermenters. All the free run juice was immediately drained off to concentrate the ferment. Twice daily pump overs were performed for the first 8 days of fermentation, followed by a move to a punch-down protocol. After 12 days, the juice was pressed off the skins and settled in tank for 2 days. From here, the wine was racked to barrel and allowed to finish malolactic fermentation. Another racking was performed, a bit of our Estate Cabernet was blended in to add structure. The resulting wine was aged 16 months in 40% new American and Hungarian oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
