Tasting Notes
Rich blackberry and cocoa arise from the glass of this darkly hued wine. Upfront, ripe and jammy Zinfandel plum is combined with rich blueberry and bramble berries from the Merlot and Syrah. Gracefully large yet rounded tannin fill the mid-palate while just a hint of vanilla tinged American Oak fills out the edges allowing flavors to linger gracefully on the finish. A multifaceted “big” red, this ZSM is ready to be paired with a wide range of plates, from an appetizer of creamy goat cheese and charcuterie to full on BBQ briskett.
Vineyard Notes
The Zinfandel all comes from our Kate’s Vineyard which lies in the Kiler Canyon just a half mile southwest of our Estate. The Syrah and some Merlot comes from the Rolph Family Vineyard a mile northwest of us. The balance of Merlot comes from our Estate plantings at the very top of Calcareous Vineyard property. The 2017 vintage was overall a perfectly typical Paso Robles growing season. Decent rainfall and mild to warm Spring was followed by very warm ripening period. These are the conditions that allow our region to produce such incredible examples of such a wide range of varietals.
Winemaker Notes
The Syrah and Merlot were picked over the same 2 day time period and were fermented together. The later ripening Zinfandel was harvested later and fermented by itself. All lots were hand picked and destemmed whole berryinto 3.5 ton concrete fermenters. A regiment of twice daily punch-downs and a pump-over every third day promoted a gentle but steady extraction of phenolics. The wine was left on skins from 12 to 18 days, pressing at first sign of rougher tannins. The free run and press fractions were combined, and the blend put together after completion of malo-lactic fermentation. After 17 months in barrel the lot was racked out and was bottled promptly after going to tank.

I have tried many reed wines and this one was hands down my favorite out of all. I'm definitely going back to this excellent winery for this specific bottle.

I am a huge fan of your wines but this one tops my list! I have given it out as gifts many times and turned several friends onto the club because of this wine. The blend is a perfect mix and it is a staple and my 'go to' wine for sure.

Had my first ZSM in 2015 and this one is outstanding as well.
