Dark purple in the glass, demonstrating a fully extracted, youthful wine. Up front, full of dark currants, blueberry and layered upon cacoa, chalky gravel and smoky tannins with a beautiful core acidity. The definition of a rich and full bodied red, this wine is just now approaching its prime and should gracefully complex and evolve in the bottle for the next for 14-16 years. This is the bottle to grab when serving hearty meals like braised beef short rib or creamy, bacon and mushrooms over fresh pappardelle
The chalky soils of the Calcareous Vineyard produce fruit forward wines balanced by firm backbones of tannin and acid. This play between richness and structure is most prominent in the Bordeaux varietals and especially in this blend. 2017 was a vintage tailor made for allowing our vineyard to express these varietals. Excellent flowering conditions produced a healthy crop load helping to express more nuance as opposed to pure power. Finally, a warm late summer/fall provided ample fruit and softening of tannins to complete a fully balanced wine.
Each of these varietals ripen at a different time in the vineyard, thus each is handled separately during harvest, with blending taking place after completion of primary fermentation. This form of treatment also allows for a full sensory evaluation of the young wines before they are deemed acceptable for inclusion in the Lloyd blend. Bordeaux varietals demand an oxygen rich environment for fermentation, thus each lot was open top fermented with twice daily pump overs and délestage performed as necessary to fully realize extraction. After pressing, free-run and press fractions were evaluated for proper balance and were then combined to form a final blend for aging.
