Tasting Notes
The dark, opaque ruby in color, the nose is heavy with dark fruits and essential oil of spring flowers. This is followed by strong varietal favors of dark chocolate, cassis and spice. Fully ripe, richly layered tannins produce the trademark chalky finish that our soil imparts on the wine.
Vinous - 92 pts Inky purple. Powerful, smoke- and spice-accented black currant, cherry and vanilla aromas show very good clarity and a hint of pipe tobacco. Appealingly sweet and expansive on the palate, offering intense dark fruit preserve and spicecake flavors complemented by a suave mocha flourish. Shows surprising vivacity for its heft and finishes very long, sweet and smooth; harmonious tannins add gentle grip. -- Josh Raynolds
Vineyard Notes
Sealed with the signature of our owner Dana Brown, this wine is built upon Cabernet from our Block 7 which is planted to Clone 15. This block is located between our 2 Syrah blocks, on the steepest and chalkiest soils of our entire Estate. These extremely slow growing vines produce a tiny amount of unmatched Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 vintage, while dry, was marked by mild temperatures during the summer, allowing for long hang time for the fruit on the vines.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was handpicked and cluster sorted before de-stemming. The un-crushed whole berries were then placed into new French oak barrels with the heads removed. The fermentation took place inside the barrels, with mixing and punch-downs performed 3 times daily by the winemaker. Upon completion of primary fermentation, the barrels were temporarily sealed and the wine allowed to sit on the skins for a total of 52 days. The act of fermenting in barrel allows for 100% new oak to be used without the oak profile becoming a dominant feature. The grapes were then dug out by hand, gently pressed, and the wine racked back into the same barrels with the heads now replaced. Small amounts of Malbec and Cab Franc were used to top the barrels and the wine aged for 32 months before bottling.
