Moose is dedicated to the alter ego of our founder, Lloyd “Moose” Messer. It was conceived to be the most profound expression of our Estate Syrah. By blending in Petit Verdot, we add color, weight, and structure to an already substantial wine to create a singular wine, Moose. 

Tasting Notes
Pours an inky maroon with a Syrah dominated nose of blackberry, cured meat and black licorice. A powerful yet elegant structure reveals itself immediately on the palate and builds in richness over time. The more angular tannins of the Petit Verdot and toasted french oak start to show towards the finish giving the wine ample structure to frame the perfectly ripe fruit character of the Syrah.

Vineyard Notes
The 2021 Moose comes from a combination of our Estate Block 8 Syrah, a south facing chalky slope which is our lowest yielding, most intensely structured Syrah we produce. The Petit Verdot from our estate produces extremely small berries and is one of the few varieties that can compete enough on the palate with Syrah to reveal its own unique dark fruit character. 2021 was what I refer to as a "Winemaker's Vintage" in the sense that it was an extremely agreeable vintage to manage. The fruit on the vine had long ripeness windows which take the pressure off the picking timetable and allowed more blend like Moose to be co-fermented, my preferred method of producing blended wines. These vintages free us up to take more chances and try ideas that would not be possible in more challenging conditions
Winemaker Notes
The 2 blocks of Syrah and Petit Verdot were hand picked the same day, de-stemmed without crushing and fermented in 4.5 ton open top concrete tanks. Twice daily pump-overs were performed for the first 5 days of ferment, followed by combination of delestage and pump over to maximize oxygen interplay. After 10 days, the ferment slowed down and was allowed to complete to dryness with twice daily punch downs. The must was pressed and all press/free run fractions were combined. The resulting wine was aged for 17 months in a combination of 4000L neutral french oak tank and 265L french oak barrels, 80% of which was new.

Food Pairing Notes
The combination of richness and angularity allow Moose to pair well with most features on the main course section of the menu. Can work beautifully with cheese centered pasta dishes but will perfectly come to life alongside the smoked pork spareribs your best local pit master can produce.
