2021 Lloyd

Lloyd Messer always envisioned the Calcareous Vineyard site as being a classic producer of Bordeaux varietals. This Estate blend is an annual confirmation of that vision. Highlighting our plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot as well as Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a testament to our site's ability to produce transcendent examples of a wide range of varietals.

Tasting Notes
Dark purple in the glass showing a high level of extraction. Up front, full of dark currants and blueberry layered upon cacao nibs. The mid palate is full of chalky gravel and spicy tannins with a beautiful core acidity. The definition of a rich and full bodied red, this wine is just now approaching its prime and should gracefully complex and evolve in the bottle for the next for 12-14 years.

Wine Story

Vineyard Notes
Lloyd is a 5 Bordeaux varietal blend consisting of fruit all from the Calcareous Vineyard. Malbec, Merlot, and Cab Franc were all planted in our original 2002 plantings along with additional acres of each in 2018. Cabernet Sauvignon was planed in 2002 and 2014, and Petit Verdot was added in 2014.
Winemaker Notes
2021 was a spectacular year in Paso Robles, and especially noted for even ripening and long hang times allowing for co-fermentation. My preferred method for producing blends is to have the blending take place as early as possible and outside of field blended vineyards, co-fermentation is the best option. Each one of these was fermented with at least one other varietal, and in one tank we were able to have Merlot, Cab Franc and Malbec all fermenting together at once. This vintage is not just a high water mark for Paso Robles wines in general, but Estate blends such as Lloyd were the true beneficiaries of a magnificent vintage.
Production Notes
All fruit was hand picked, sorted and then destemmed before placing in concrete open top fermenters as whole berries. A combination of pump-over, delestage and punch down was used during primary fermentation with the various tanks spending between 11 and 17 days on skins. Each tank was pressed and settled separately and allowed to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. Once this secondary fermentation was completed, the final blend was put together and racked together in tank. This wine was returned to barrel, 25% New French and 15% New American and aged for a total of 20 months.
