2008 Moose

89% Syrah, 11% Petit Verdot

Our inaugural release of our Moose blend is an extremely opaque purple offering, with a nose full of plum blackberry jam. The thick smooth mouth feel is redolent of pumpkin pie spices, roast meats, cocoa and black pepper. Nicely integrated oak mingles with the tannic back bone to produce a stunningly long yet elegant finish.

Wine Story

Vineyard Notes
The 2008 Moose is a chance to showcase one of the Rhone varietals from our Estate vineyard. In this case it is the 2.65 acre block 8 Estrella clone syrah planted in 2002. In 2008, this block produced a record 4.7 tons for a total of 1.77 tons/acre. This shows in the intense density of the wine. We blended the Estate Syrah with Petit Verdot from the nearby Denner Vineyard, which produces perhaps the finest example of the varietal on the Central Coast.
Winemaker Notes
The Syrah for the 2008 Moose, 80% de-stemmed and 20% whole cluster, was placed in a single 4 ton open top stainless fermenter. The tank was cold soaked for 5 days and upon warming, allowed to ferment with native yeasts. A routine of 3 daily punch downs combined with a 3 hour delestage every other day followed, for a total of 29 days on skins. The fruit was gently pressed and racked into a new French Puncheon which accounted for 21% of the blend. Another 39% was racked into new Meyrieux and Taransaud 228 L barrels all with medium light toasting. The remaining 50% went into once used French and Hungarian cooperage. Upon completion of secondary fermentation, the wine was racked and combined with the Petit Verdot. The Petit Verdot was fermented in a 1 ton open top tank also with a combination of punch downs and delestage. The finalized blend was returned to barrel and aged for a total of 26 months before bottling.
